Farewell party

Today, we had a farewell party giving farewell to Kenji, Orlando and Robert from Prof de Pablo's group. Prof de Pablo arranged champagne, wines, and lots of food at his house. His wife met everyone cheerfully. The house is so nice and beautiful. Because they have small kids, they have all painting etc pasted on the walls in the kids section. Ya, its divided in two sections.
I could see lots of paintings especially modern art in his house. His wife said they were painted by his brother. I also saw lots of musical instruments in his house. Guitar, piano etc. I played piano...Boss was looking....I am not sure if he was appreciating or not ! but his wife appreciated much...

We had delicious food, we ate, enjoyed, and did all chit chat....Entire group could not come...We missed those who could not come...

In the end, all these three guys spoke about their experiences in Madison, about their experiences in the group, about Prof de Pablo and by the time all those finished, Prof de Pablo looked sentimental about their leaving...They video shooted the scences.

Prof de Pablo is consedered to be a tough professor, but tough professors also have feelings....I know, big professors live prosperous lives with their families. They are often tough on their students, they love their students when they are there....they miss them when they leave...in all cases, they wish them all luck in their lives. I am not sure if they keep in touch, they must be doing so....Then new students come and the group is refreshed...New students start from scratch...in 5 years they become experts ! The time when they are at their peaks, professors back on them. They trust them...they have their faith in them...they prove themselves worthy of them.

In return, they get all their love from the professors ! They get their platforms, they get recommendations, and all in all everything

This is a professor's typical life...

Yes...legend has it...

Legend has it that when he announced that he was taking the last course in that particular semester, ENTIRE department enrolled for it.

If you are a chemical engineer, you must have heard of Prof Biron Bird. If you have not heard, either you are not a chemical engineer or probably you have never taken a course in transport phenomena.

In the chemical engineering lounge, when we heat up our lunch in the microwave and eat it, we often grab news paper in our hands. We usually find the cross word puzzle fully solved and an A + written on that. Yes we know that he solves it and grades it himself. A thing which people say he is doing since many years.

He comes to the weekly seminars and asks if there are cookies. He sits in the front row, waves to other colleagues from there. The speaker of the seminar feels proud when Prof. Bird attends a seminar.

Now some "quotes" about him from other professors.

"Suppose you are very smart...your name is Prof. Biron Bird..."

"You should take a lecture from prof. Bird, you will know how to use a blackboard properly "

"I have often struggled with transport phenomena...ya we can't be as good as Bird "

" To think about writing a book on transport phenomena being in a department where you have Biron Bird ? You know guys ? It sucks !!! "

" I know God doing chemical engineering...he is Biron Bird "

"Though this course might not help you directly in research, but enroll in that because we don't want people to ask you " Do they teach Transport Phenomena from you graduated ?" And you might then have to say passively ...ya they do...They should know from your transcript ! Oh...Wisconsin ??! Must be good in transport phenomena..." The school where this legendary professor cheers everyone till date when he is close to 85 !!

Long live Professor Biron Bird !!

And yes...legend has it...

Science Vs Technology

We are engineers ! And we can only apply the theories to practical applications. We can not develop theories. Why am I thinking all this now ?! Do I want to develop theories ?! Yes I want to, but I conclude that I can't !

It takes hell a lot of patience and perseverance to develop theories because the chances of failure a way higher than those in applying a theory at some application and not getting results !

I quote Dr Mashelkar's statement here "One must understand that manufacturing and S&T are two different endeavours, culturally and operationally. In manufacturing, we look for zero defects and no failures, whereas in science, there is a fundamental right to fail."

But then it pays that well...to be in Science. Look at Einstein !

Again a statement made by Prof Mashelkar

Science is an exploration of the nature of reality, both inside and outside us. The emphasis here is on things, which are quantifiable and measurable and on theories, which can be tested and demonstrated and facts, which can be observed and verified by others. Imagination plays a vital part in both science and art, but in science it has certain constraints. As Feynman has said, ‘whatever we are allowed to imagine in science has to be consistent with everything else that we know. The problem of creating something which is new, but which is consistent with everything which has been seen before, is one of extreme difficulty’. At the same time, the difficulty with science is often not with the new ideas, but in escaping the old ones. A certain amount of irreverence is essential for creative pursuit in science. I believe that if we promote that irreverence in Indian science, by change of personal attitudes, change of funding patterns, creating new organizational values, creating that extra space for risk taking, respecting the occasional mavericks and rewarding the risk takers, then not only will the fun & joy of doing science will increase, but also Indian science will make that difference, that “much awaited” difference.
