Why there should not be reservation in IITs

For those who raised the question why there shouldn't be reservation in IITs, in this debate I want to point out why !! Following would try to make the image of IITs / IIMs clear in everyone's mind ! Some portions of this have been taken from my friend's blog.

If they happen to do it, they destroy the one sense of pride I had in qualifying arguably the “toughest undergraduate selection procedure in the world” has been taken from me. What is being touted as a reservation is nothing less than a slap on the face of all those who spent restless hours spread over innumerable nights trembling with trepidation over what was going to confront them inside the examination hall on that fateful day. The day you gave the JEE. There was no escaping the gravity of the moment. The absolute elation of coming out of the hall and discovering that you got at least one of the 10 questions right and that put you right in the top percentile of all the gawking trembling guys on the campus. I ask you, will the guys giving JEE now have any of the amazing memories to share that we have? 50 % of those who deserve will be deprived of that.

Will they ever understand the joy of spending an entire weekend to solve just one question of Irodov and exulting at the thought that they had just entered the Physics’ extremely-long-walk-to-the-hall-of-fame?
And I haven’t even started to trash the explanation that they have come up with to justify this travesty. Apparently they feel that this drastic (try foolhardy) measure is absolutely necessary to uplift the masses who are deprived of the education.

They are trying to tell me that all my God level friends who made it to the topmost percentile among all of us were bumbling idiots who made it across the hurdle of those measly 30 questions (10 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) just because they got together in some stupid little classroom for 2 years and practiced hard to crack the paper. God save them who could do a little less and were deprived because of 3000 seats, half were wasted as those were admitted who did not deserve but had RESERVATION !!!!!

Let me tell the esteemed people right up there trying to make life easier for those who will be reserved to be in.

The people who made it across did not do it because they were coached to do so! They did it because they had it in themselves to understand the magic of complex numbers and the beauty of interfering light waves. These geniuses (and I am proud just to have been able to hang out with some of them) could solve linear differential equations in their sleep. Now I went to these so called “Education Sweat shops” myself and believe me that it took me an entire day to close my jaw once I saw an AIR 3 give the correct answers to 10 straight integrals in a MATHS QUIZ RAPID FIRE ROUND. If the gravity of the above situation doesn’t strike you, consider this. The time span for the answers was 60 seconds. That means that the guy heard and answered 10 integrals at the rate of one per 6 seconds! Hell, I can’t draw the integral sign that quick.

If anyone benefits from reservations, then yes I raise my hand. My muddled wits were cleared by attending these places where just by being around smart people made me take a peek into the fascinating world of Organic bio-molecules and their electron affinities. Kind of the best example of a Pygmalion effect. And I ask you – is that so wrong? Just because I got “tutored” worked hard and got better at science through hard labor with some guidance, is it justification enough to turn a winner’s circle into a dance floor for some?

By this particular argument, I would recommend that all Corporates roll up their HR departments and ask them to go home because isn’t skill improvement of employees through relevant coaching an integral condition of their employment? Hell, by that same argument, I would call upon the Government to close up first its HRD ministry and then the entire education system so that only the meritorious shall rise to the required positions by displaying their ingenuity.

If the image of IITs is clear in the mind of those who believe there should be reservation in IITs, let me just give you a scenario:

Imagine a class where 50 % students understand whats happening in the class rest 50 % simply don't understand!

There are two gaussian curves of performance. The industries come and ask you to fill at the top of your form if you were admitted though the reservations. They just don't take you. Half of the IITians pass out without somethign good to do. Will that improve or deprove the image of IITs ?

IITs are not things which should be reserved! They deserve performance and meritocracy ! It would be insane to reserve 50 % seats which should be alloted to those only who deserve !

I am not opposing reservations in Bollywood, politics, etc etc....but please !! Leave IITs/ IIMs out of that.

Added to this, all these things are only politically driven to grab the votes of lower classes who are united and see immediate benefits rather than the upper classes who don't even go to vote and are divided.

This mail touched me

Really few things touch you ! Here is a mail which touched me to the bottom of my heart. I am being emotional on this mail. I am talking about a person who is 10 years elder to me.

He used to be in the same office as I was in Dr Reddy's. I spent most of my time with him. Recently he mailed me about his son that he named him Rohit. When I congratulated and asked why he named his son Rohit, this is what he said.

haaji , aap ko bool nahi sakange iseliye to aapa ka naam rakha hai. Is tarah tumhe zindagi bhar yaad kar sakenge...Ok I will do so in conveying to all. Every one is fine & doing good

Regards.

Lets protest ...

It shocked me when I got a few forwards about the petition to the president to protest against the reservation in the IITs and IIMs.

On one hand, all over the world, they talk about the reputation of IITs. On the other, this reservation is going to ruin the whole image of the IITs. I can't stand something like that. I will not mind and go down to saying that my blood boils because of this.

The policy makers don't deserve to be where they are. They don't know what they are doing. They don't know what it takes to be in IITs and what it takes to maintain the image globally. God save the image of IITs where 50 % people are those "who don't deserve to be there".

First of all, why should there be reservation for those who don't deserve to be there in the first place ?!!!!

Of 150,000 students who take the exam, top 1.5 % make it to the final selection list. All this reservation will not only destroy the whole image the IITs, but also make it more and more difficult for the candidates who deserve to be there.

All this will only worsen the image IIT's global image. Lets all protest against the reservation. Please sign the petition !!! By now you must have received that several times...

If not, here it is...
