Ye hai Goonj Dil Se

Letter to Kashiyatra team
Dear juniors!

I could not think of writing something related to Indian Music, ITBHU without writing ye hai goonj dil se…Today I felt nostalgic about ITBHU, when a junior asked me to write some of my experiences of Music Club in IT. I passed out in 2004 from Chemical Engineering and I held a position of being the convener of the Indian Musical Festival- Goonj 2003. The message to write the account reminded me of all those memories associated with IT, Indian Music Club, Goonj, Kulgeet, Dhrupad Mela, even Fine Arts club, Western Music Club- In which most of my friends were, down to that endless Chemical Engineering Building, the festivals, the traditions ITBHU follows, starting from Pahalwan’s lassi and longlata to Assi ghat, Lanka ki chai, and those majestic playfields and samosa corners of ITBHU. No one can forget the under-graduation life which is always full of enthusiasm, variety, friends, chit chat, sports, and festivals and so on.

Being given this job, I would recollect my memories to write about Goonj, some of my experiences, some of my thoughts.

Goonj had its own history I remember that Abhijeet Mukherjee started this day-long musical festival called Goonj some time in 1998. It was a decent hit in that year. I joined IT in 2000. At that time, there were people like Amitanshu and Siddhartha who could play synthesizer, flute, guitar both Hawaiian and Spanish, Mouth organ sing in a melodious voices and could try hands on many other percussion instruments, I remember as many as 9 different musical instruments. They were immaculate! They used to compose theme based songs! Goonj song was Amitanshu’s composition which was a big hit in 2000. This song not only raised all bars but improved the quality of Indian Music in IT. The group expanded with his friends, and later some of first year students joined up. They composed Goonj, Toolika( another Fine Arts festival started by Amit Morya. ) College ke vo din, and many other songs which were famous in IT. Then there were songs were composed on Kashi Yarta, Banaras, and what not !! I remember composing a song with Khetan on Technex ! So there was an appreciable contribution of India Music Club in all other clubs.

Goonj was celebrated as a day long Musical festival which used to start with classical music. The memories lead me to that harmonious Flute musical piece with which Kaushik started the ceremony. He had learnt that for 10 years. He was undoubtedly the best on Campus.

Going to the past, when I was in second year, there was a forth year Spardha group, consisting of all athletes who prepared two three songs of the movie satte pe satta. One typical group song- pyaar hame kis mod pe le aaya was enjoyed by most number of people. They were the happening people in IT ! I still remember all those. Nishant Khattar is here in Madison. I happened to meet him and we both talked about the old days. I performed lots of things here on the Diwali night which he might have cherished.

The preparations of the festival used to start around a month from the even when people used to come to Music Hall / Kings’ pavilion for practice. I would say it was a great participation taken the fact that there are some 1600 students in IT. One other attraction of the event was antakshari for which many people used to wait eagerly.

Usually, all the events were judged by Mukherjee Sir and he was always a perfect judge ! He was an equally talented singer. Had he participated, he would have won most of the musical competitions. We really loved to listen to his old hindi songs.
Hooting !! My account on anything on music in ITBHU is incomplete if I don’t mention the level of hooting. Yes !! Even though there were judges, it was the crowd of ITBHU which was capable of differentiating the performers. Their standards were always higher than those performing on stage. This used to make it pretty tough for the performers. It was a duty of the conveners to stop that but they could never do that. I guess ITBHU still maintains those standards. Memories go on and on…
